Algerian Foreign Minister: “Algeria safe from Tunisian and Egyptian events”

Algeria is safe from the Tunisian and Egyptian events which ended up dropping Zinelabidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak, Algerian Foreign Minister, Mourad Medelci, said.

 The Foreign Minister asserted that Algeria already lived such events and even more serious than that, but government was wise throughout dealing positively with people’s demands.

 

Medelci added, during a press conference, he organized with his Portuguese counterpart Luis Amado, at the Mithaq residence, Algiers, that Algeria witnesses a normal and natural situation, and order is prevailing all the country’s regions”.

 

“When social pressure rose, government resorted to calm down the situation through clear decisions”, in reference to supporting oil and sugar prices, as well as the recent measures for youth employment. “Algeria noticed a tension before Tunisia because of citizens’ daily problems”.

 

“What Egypt experienced is not necessarily an extension to what happened in Tunisia. We should leave the game for its creators”; he commented on the promotion of the domino theory in the Arab region.

 

At the political level, Medelci denied rumors by some on the suppression of universal freedoms of Algerians, such as the right to demonstrate and protest against the backdrop of preventing demonstrations in Algiers during the recent weeks, pointing out that the state did not prevent free expression of political positions saying; “Who wants to express his opinion is free and even those who were unable to protests in Algiers were able to report their positions to the world”.

 

Representative of Algerian diplomacy expressed concern about the situation in Libya, wishing things will return to normal as soon as possible; “We are concerned, like others, about Libya which is is living a growing of violence and destruction of state institutions”, in reference to the control of opposition to many parts of the country, that Algeria deported, since the crisis erupted in Libya,  2000 Algerians by plane, and also sent a ship to Benghazi, where there are 700 Algeria, in order to take them to their home country. He also refuted the information reported by media sources on the move of Algerian mercenaries to Libya on board of Algerian aircrafts; “These are just lie that are not important”.
