Algerian MPs: “It Is Our Right To Have New Privileges”
National People’s Assembly MPs came out of the ordinary during today’s parliamentary day that was organized on Tuesday, on the role of the legislative institution under the Constitution of 2016, and the initiative that raised a lot of controversy, and there are people who said it was a legitimate right, as the representatives of the people said that they live their last days as deputies, asking to receive two new grants in their accounts, the first is called the assistant’s grant, that is in the benefit of an expert who accompanies the attorney in formulating his questions and evaluating the economic and political situation by virtue of their lack of knowledge in all fields, and the second grant is more important, as they said, its value is at least 120.000 ZDZ.
MPs went beyond that, when they asserted on the importance of reviewing the terms of retirement, by enabling them to obtain a respectable pension which is represented in the calculation of years of service at the public and private economic institutions, and liberal professions, asking at the same time the government to treat them like the German MPs, in terms of incentives and privileges, a point that was wrapped in mystery.
In the parliamentary day, and before bidding the farewell to another parliamentary session in the old constitution, which noticed the absence of all members of the government, headed by President of the National People’s Assembly, Mohamed Larbi Ould Khalifa, the People’s MPs renew their demands of the need to remedy the deficiencies that are listed in the law on parliament, to enable it to perform their duties to the fullest, and this is consistent with the constitutional amendment.
Vice President of the Council, Berrabeh Zebbar, who chaired Tuesday’s parliamentary session, said that these demands are legitimate, saying: “We did not ask for wage increases or allowances, but we demanded remedying the shortcomings on the grounds that the profession of an MP is very important. “
For his part, the MP for the front of Justice and Development, Lakhdar Ben Khellaf, said in his speech; “It is not logical to ask for increases currently, as we know the financial situation of the government”, but he used the opportunity to make accusations to the way the ministers treat the MPs, wondering; “What is the future of the government in the presence of ministers who do not respect the MP and do not respond to the concerns of the citizens?”, which is the same view of his colleague in the opposition, Hamdadouche Nasser, who criticized the work of the legislative body and the way it works.
