Algerian MPs have called on the justice Minister, Tayeb Louh, to take the necessary steps to reintroduce the death penalty back into the country’s judicial system after being put into limbo since the year 1993.

Many deputies of the national Popular Assembly said during a session devoted to amendments to the penal code that it was imperious to impose the death sentence on all those culprits found guilty of children’s kidnapping and killing.

An RND party MP described such a crime committed against innocent children as tantamount to a horrendous terror misdeed utterly condemned and denounced by all humankind.

In his statement before the Assembly, justice minister, Tayeb Louh stressed that such criminal misdeeds would be fought strenuously by the authorities adding that maximum prison terms would be inflicted on the perpetrators of children’s abductions and abuse.

Some have underlined that through sustained child protection work, welfare bodies including Unicef support countries in addressing the factors that expose children to violence, exploitation and abuse, both during emergencies and in the context of long-term development.

They also noted that relevant studies illustrate how countries are helped to strengthen child protection systems and promote social change to align social norms and practices with child protection.
