Algerian paintings at European Parliament

Algerian artist Abu Bakr Hamsi exhibited his paintings at the European Parliament in Brussels during the week 3-7 November showing symbols of his childhood inspired from his native town.

  • Hamsi told Algeria News Agency (APS) Sunday he is inspired from the daily life of people in the Kabylie region (north of Algeria) and Berber signs.
  • The 40 paintings were exhibited during the Arab Week as part of the European Year for Intercultural Dialogue.
  • They show traditional wedding parties, housework and landscapes of the Kabylie region as well as women portraits and traditional ceramic dishes.
  • In a press conference held after the closure of the Arab Week, Hamsi said Brussels is the city of diversity and it opened doors to the Arab World.
  • “My paintings show the daily life in the Kabylie region while others represent a possible co-existence in the world,” he told the conference.
  • Hamsi has been living in Brussels since 1975.
