About twenty eminent Algerian scientists living abroad, in a letter issued Wednesday, expressed their firm protest against the insidious resolution of the European Parliament (EP), adopted on November 26th on the human rights situation in Algeria.

In their letter, the Algerian scientists said they were “shocked” and “surprised” by the European Parliament’s resolution on the human rights situation in Algeria.

To this end, the signatories of the letter of protest wish to specify that “the points mentioned in the EP resolution are purely a collection of unverified information, freely mentioned in the Algerian media without any censorship”.

“The Algerian diaspora from all over the world is closely following the events in Algeria relating to the Algerian judicial system which currently functions as an independent body”, also underline the Algerian scientists.

Moreover, the signatories believe in their letter that the latest report of the European Parliament “is perceived as a prosecution without due process because the accusations listed have never been verified or have never had the opportunity to be refuted by the Algerian authorities”.

Denouncing the fact that the European Parliament “acted as judge, jury and executioner with the so-called democratic resolution against Algeria”, the Algerian scientists also believe that “a fair process would be for the European Parliament to listen to both sides before rushing to judge”.

Moreover, the European Parliament “could have contacted the Algerian Parliament to discuss this issue,” they added, before deploring “the blatant lack of respect” shown by the European Parliament towards the Algerian people and its institutions.
