Algerian security forces stiffen control on the southern borders to avert arms smuggling

In conjunction with the national popular army troops, the Algerian security forces are implementing a brand new strategy to secure the borders with Libya and reduce the activities of the arms smugglers, reliable sources have revealed.

• The plan consists in boosting the number of the security forces in the areas of Hassi Merssaoud, Ouargla, Al Oued and Ghardia and intensifying patrols in the region.

• The operation is designed to avert the passage of weapons from Libya to the Algerian territories amid fierce battles between the NTC militants and forces loyal to Moamar Al Queddafi in the last strongholds of the beleaguered leader.

• The new strategy has proven its efficiency since it led to the arrest of several arms smugglers and reduced tension over the borders with Libya.

• The gangs are drawing benefit from the chaotic situation in the neighbouring North African state to smuggle huge quantities arms through the Algerian desert.
