Algiers- Algeria ranks among the first counties which consume the largest quantity of milk in the Mediterranean in 2001, General Manager of the National Office of Milk Production, Masar Fathi, said.

“Algeria produced and consumed one billion and 400 million liters of milk in 2011, with an average of consumption of 120 liters of milk and derivatives per individual annually”, he added.

“2011 was the year of assessment and an important start for raising the production of milk. We covered 100% of the market requirements of milk in this year, and eliminate the problems of distribution, and provide enough powder milk to cover the consumer’s need until Ramadan 2012. The import bill of milk for 2012 is 40 billion AD. There would be no increase in milk prices”, he asserted.

“The National Professional Committee of Milk Producers and Distributors is organizing a meeting with all sub-committees across the big towns, to discuss the problems of farmers and owners of milk companies, in light of the global crisis and economic changes”.

The same official explained that fresh milk production increased by 42% during the year 2011, compared to last year, as 560 million litters were collected in 2011, compared to 395 million liters in 2010.
