Algeria’s FLN withdraws confidence from Belkhadem
Central Committee of Algeria’s ruling National Liberation front (FLN) Thursday dropped Abdelaziz Belkhadem from the position of Secretary General as 160 members voted for withdrawing confidence from him while 156 wanted him to be re-elected.
The vote took place in Ryadh Hotel in Algiers under tightened security surveillance.
Belkhadem did not hesitate to applaud when the vote results were announced. He was smiling and said he is “proud of respecting democracy and transparence principle by organizing a vote.”
The vote started at 11 am and ended at 4:15 pm. Intervention forces were mobilized outside to face any clashes following the results announcement.
Immediately after the announcement, Belkhadem said he is proud of the smooth running of the vote which he had called for to end the internal crisis.
“Congratulations to the Front. I respected democracy. This is the democratic competition which we should practice. I wish success to my successor,” he added.
“I won because the party did. I am proud and I accomplished successful achievements when I was its Secretary General,” he told journalists.
Messahel: Belkhadem caused dissidences
Minister Abdelkader Messahel, member of the central Committee said he was not against Belkhadem but dissidences took place inside the party. Because of thet, he called for withdrawing confidence from him.
“Belkhadem has been my friend for 50 years. I am not against him but his leadership of the party,” he told Echorouk.
Ben Hemadi: Belkhadem was not up to it
Minister Moussa Be Hamadi, member of the Central Committee said he voted for withdrawing confidence from Belkhadem as he was not up to the party leadership.
“The FLN was supposed to be a model to all the parties and not conflicts party as it led the country to its independence in 1962,” he added.
