Algiers- U.S. understands Algeria interest in a “successful” and “stable” transition in Libya, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffry D. Feltman says here on Monday.

Mr. Feltman added that USA wants to tighten its ties with Algeria in the fight against arms trafficking across the borders, particularly that caused by the crisis in Libya.

During a press conference at the U.S. Embassy Feltman said; “We want to strengthen the U.S-Algeria ties in order to control and prevent the smuggling of arms from Libya”.

The U.S official asserted that the transcontinental crime, especially arms smuggling is the most important issue of the U.S-Algerian talks.

Mr. Feltman also highlights the Algerian experience in combating the cross-borders crime, especially arms trafficking, pointing to the strong contribution of Algeria during the Comprehensive Forum on Counterterrorism, held at the end of September in conjunction with the meetings of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Asked about the political and economic reforms by the Algerian government, Feltman asserted that USA encourages the Algerian authorities to move forward in this way, pointing to the U.S-Algerian partnership in all areas.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffry D. Feltman met on Sunday evening with the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and held talks with the Algerian FM Mourad Medelci, and the Minister Delegate in charge of Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel.
