Algiers Metro, operational at last after 30 years in limbo
The Algerian capital is getting ready to receive the Algiers Metro after waiting for 30 years to see this long-awaited achievement being finally translated into reality.
- Having a length of 9.3 km and serving 10 stations including the municipalities of Bachdjarah, El Magharia, Hussein Dey, Sidi M’hamed and Algiers city-center, the Algiers Metro also includes several extensions with the aim of reaching a 40 km long network extending from Dar El Beida to Draria by the year 2020.
- It should be noted that the technical study of the Algiers Metro project started in 1981 and wound up in 1985.
- The kick off of the construction works of this project was blocked in 1985 on account of the economic and financial crisis which bedeviled Algeria at that time.
- Since the launching of the project in 1981, 5 Presidents of the Republic, 27 governments, 13 heads of government and 14 transport Ministers have succeeded one another without achieving the project which has cost 5.3 billion dollars and for a length of just 9.3 km.
- The much – awaited Algiers Metro is slated to be officially inaugurated in early November 2011.
