Only 30 percent of containers are set to scanning control in the Port of Algiers, amid the existence of only one scanner device.

APS news agency has quoted on Wednesday a source within regional office of Customs as saying that the scanner of the port of the capital has been controlling for a year an average of 150 to 220 containers a day, out of an overall of 600 to 700 containers treated everyday by Algiers Port Enterprise (EPAL) and Emirates’ DP World, which run jointly the container terminal of the Port of Algiers since 2008.

The source mentioned that the rate of containers control has never gone beyond 30%, even during the peak periods, saying that “such a situation is due to the heavy deficit in terms of scanning capacities.”

In fact, Customs Head Office has already required from the two partner managers of the terminal of the Port of Algiers, namely EPAL and DP World, to increase their scanning capacities, however, such a demand has not been satisfied yet, the source said.
