Algeria contains about 8 million vehicles, with an annual increase of 600,000 vehicles per year, Transport Minister, Amar Ghoul revealed on Monday from Oran.

“This large figure shows the extent of the expansion of vehicles activity in Algeria , which is expected to reach 20 million vehicles with the prospects of 2020. This figure makes it imperative to search for strategies that are capable to stand up to all the challenges that will face this large quantity of vehicles, and we can rely on several areas in the field of transport, and through which we will play an active role which would modernize the sector and reduce the traffic crisis. There is a need for the development of rail transport as an important and urgent strategy and a necessity, whether in the field of transport of passengers or goods.
“Road transport is currently counting more than 97% of the volume of cargo transportation. Through this vision of the future of the sector, the transport with rail will be supported in the near future, with including approximately 12.500 km, to link the various regions across the country with railway lines, as the project will include the connection of sea ports with ports dry railway, which will transport containers via rail instead of trucks to eliminate the problem of overcrowding in seaports.”
“Future of trucking will not be affected by the project of rail transport, but it will bring transportation projects as an important add for the transport, and to lift the pressure that roads noticed, as these trains’ speed reaches 220 km per hour for the transport of persons and 120 kilometers per hour with respect to the transport of goods. There are also studies for the introduction of high-speed railway “TGV” which speed exceeds 350 kilometers per hour as future projects. There are 20 projects of “tramway” across the country, within the framework of the strategy for the modernization of the urban transport sector”.
