America Opens Its Embassy In Occupied Jerusalem Against Backdrop Of Israeli Massacres
Against a backdrop of the ongoing Israeli massacres of innocent Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the United States began Monday, opening its embassy in occupied El Qods or Jerusalem during a frantic ceremony, in line with the controversial and unfair decision taken by US President Donald Trump on the burning issue, despite the widespread international condemnation and acute Palestinian anger, amid the strict security measures taken by Israeli occupying forces since Saturday.
Renewed violent clashes erupted on Monday, on the borders of the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948, and led to the death of 43 Palestinians killed wantonly by the Israeli occupation army against a background of big demonstrations staged by thousands of disgruntled Palestinians in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Jerusalem in protest against the opening of the US Embassy in the holy city.
The US President’s daughter, Ivanka, along with her husband Jared Kushner, and two of President Trump’s advisors, as well as hundreds of dignitaries from both countries were present at the inauguration ceremony, which kicked off at 16:00 GMT, (14:00 GMT Algeria time).
“We are opening the US embassy in Jerusalem today,” US Ambassador David Friedman said at the opening ceremony of the Embassy, which was attended by a US delegation from Washington, DC, and the United States alongside several Israeli leaders.
Trump’s daughter Ivanka also made a speech after unveiling the Embassy’s logo at its entrance.
President Trump participated in the Embassy’s inauguration ceremony by delivering a speech, but via a video from the oval office in Washington.
“We have recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and today we are opening our Embassy in this holy and historic land,” said Trump.
“The United States remains fully committed to facilitating a lasting peace agreement, the United States will remain a great friend of Israel and a partner in the cause of freedom and peace,” he added.
President Trump also said in a tweet on Twitter, earlier Monday, said that “the transfer of the US Embassy to Jerusalem, is a big day for Israel,” while calling on its supporters to watch the event live on the US Fox News Channel.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army has put its forces on full alert, and said it would double the number of combat units around the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, while mobilizing about a thousand Israeli policemen in occupied Jerusalem so as to ensure security for the Embassy and its surroundings.
The opening of the US Embassy coincided with the commemoration by the Palestinians of the 70th anniversary of the “Nakba” or great catastrophe marked by the spoliation of Palestinians lands and the establishment of the Zionist entity in 1948.
The Embassy building is located at the southern tip of the city of Jerusalem, and the Embassy first moved into the US Consulate building in the same city, pending the construction of the permanent site of the Embassy, according to the US State Department.
Ambassador Friedman will in the meantime run his office in the Consular premises located in Arnona.
The US Ambassador will split his time between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem during the early stages of the Embassy transfer, as the complete transfer will take several years.
President Trump announced on the sixth of December 2017 his much-controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of occupying Israel and the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem, sparking off bitter condemnation and outrage in the Palestinian territories as well as in the Arab and Islamic countries and in other parts of the world.
