Angry citizens storm new social housing units in Médéa province
Echorouk has learnt that members of 18 disillusioned families broke into newly-built housing units on Sunday morning in the municipality of Chelala Adaoura, south of Médéa province, arguing that they had been totally ignored by the relevant authorities despite their numerous requests for the acquisition of decent accommodation over the past years.
- They said that their assault to take over by force the new social apartments was the result of despair and helplessness in the face of a callous administration and the unfair distribution by the relevant authorities of new flats destined to the needy sections of the population.
- Police forces were called in to flush out the undue occupiers of these apartments and ensuing scuffles broke out between the two sides.
- But the situation nearly took a tragic turn as one of the protesters soaked his body with petrol threatening to set himself on fire if the police forces evicted him forcibly from the new apartment together with his family members.
- Similar incidents linked to the distribution of new social apartments were also reported in the nearby locality of Kassassa, still in Médéa province.
