Bad weather in Algeria: “Several fatalities and many people marooned by surging floods”
The heavy rains which have poured down on over 15 wilayas or provinces of Algeria in the past few days have provoked severe disturbances, blocked road traffic and brought about the collapse of bridges and ramshackle dwellings.

Several people are reported to have perished and others injured in surging floods in several parts of the country notably in Mostaganem, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Biskra, M’Sila, Khenchela, Djelfa, Ain Defla, El Bayadh, Khemis Miliana, Laghouat…

Numerous schools were closed down on account of floods caused by torrential rains preventing scores of pupils from following their daily courses.

Civil protection squads were called in on many occasions to give a helping hand to several people trapped by the surging floods as well as to motorists blocked on swampy and submerged roads.

Elements of the National Popular Army (ANP) were also rushed to several areas affected by the floodings to rescue many people marooned by the surging waters after several rivers burst their banks.

Reports say that several bridges and numerous dwellings collapsed in several parts of the country on account of the sweeping floods which also provoked protracted power cuts.
