Broad survey on Algeria’s incomes since 1999
Official statistics issued by the Bank of Algeria for the period 1964 to 2012 reveal that Algeria’s total exports amounted from 1999 to the end of 2013 to 683.75 billion dollars, compared with total imports worth 398.83 billion dollars for the same period.
And of the surpluses accrued to Algeria for the payment of external debts were estimated to 25.261 billion dollars by 2007. The raw materials and inputs, as well as foreign supplies accounted for 70 percent of the country’s import bill.
According to the Central Bank of Algeria, the country’s foreign debt fell to 21.4 billion dollars at the end of 2004 and then to $16 billion at the beginning of 2006 and in 2007.
President Bouteflika’s government then decided to pay for 98% of the public external debt of Algeria, and by the end of 2013, the country’s external indebtedness attained $ 340 million.
Besides the payment of about $ 25 billion, this pushed Algeria between 1999 and 2011 to pay the equivalent of 11.79 billion dollars in debt service, and Sonatrach’s partner transfers during the same reference period reached 50.33 billion dollars.
Official figures from the Central Bank of Algeria suggest that the difference between Algeria’s overall foreign financial commitments were estimated at 78.43 billion dollars during the same period and registered a surplus of $ 284.93 completely equivalent to the total reserves of Algeria’s foreign exchange and gold reserves.
Algeria thereby contributed to enhancing the financial capacity of the credit of the International Monetary Fund at the latter’s request, to the tune of 197.81 billion dollars.
These exchange reserves can cover 40 months of imports at the current pace, which is a guarantee cover for Algeria, backed by its gold reserves estimated at 173.4 tons of gold, and worth over 5 billion dollars.
Meanwhile the National Statistics Office revealed that the GDP jumped late 2012 to 204.3 billion dollars from 89.43 billion dollars by the end of 2011.
And the per capita gross domestic product at the same dates reached $ 5449.6 in 2012, up from $ 5427.8 in 2011.
On average , the growth rates achieved by Algeria outside the hydrocarbons sector, ranged between 5% and 9.6% during the period 2000-2012, compared to the total growth rate of between 3 and 5.9% during the same period.
