Chakib Khalil : « Disappointing results emerge from Copenhagen Summit on climate change »

Results from Copenhagen ssummit on climate change, which wound up Saturday are disappointing compared to the Kyoto Protocol , said the Minister of Energy and Mines, Chakib Khalil, Sunday in Algiers.

Chakib Khalil said during his meeting with the media on the sidelines of the opening of envelopes to give fields of exploiting hydrocarbons ; « I think that the results of Copenhagen seminar are disappointing becasue there is a decline compared to the Kyoto Protocol, which included the commitment of developed countries through transfering technology and financial support, thing which was not on the agenda of this meeting ».

« Commitments by the developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol were free, however these countries did not comply at the end except some help to Africa ».

As for the position of OPEC towards the results of Copenhagen seminar, Chakib Khalil explains that the points related to the tax of CO2 and the need to participation of the oil countries to finance energy that is « friend of environment, as OPEC has expressed its concerns that were not included in the agenda of this seminar ».

« We are afraid of the CO2 tax, which was not in the aganda of Copenhagen Seminar, and fear the integration of the OPEC, along with the developed countries for their support in the field of technology and funding in order to develop an energy friendly to the environment, as this role should be assumed by the developed countries and not the oil producing countries ».

Works of the United Nations Seminar on climate, which opened on December.7 in Copenhagen had been concluded Saturday by reaching an agreement with limited ambitions to fight against the global warming.
