Chergui: “Africa Needs $ 150 Billion Dollars To Tackle Corona Virus”

The Commissioner of the Security and Peace Council at the level of the African Union (AU), Smaïl Chergui, today announced a meeting of the Council to be held this Tuesday to discuss measures to be taken to address the risks of the spread of the Corona virus Covid 19 on the African continent.

He reiterated on the occasion the AU’s condemnation of the statements of the two French doctors who called for the experimental testing of Corona medicine on Africans.

In an interview with Channel 1 of Algerian Radio, Smaïl Chergui confirmed that a meeting of the Peace Council Commission for the Union will be held next Tuesday with the participation of the Director of the World Health Organization to discuss measures to be taken to combat the Covid 19 pandemic.

Mr. Chergui stressed that the African continent would need around 150 billion dollars to deal with the Corona virus pandemic, warning against the serious repercussions that the pandemic would have on the African continent, which makes the continent bracing for the worst, as he put it.

To live up to this growing challenge, the Commissioner for Peace and Security in Africa explained that a meeting of the Union’s Security and Peace Council Commissioner will meet next Tuesday with the participation of the Director of the World Health Organization to discuss measures to be taken to confront the viral pandemic.

He further called for a ceasefire in armed conflicts, and said that “an immediate ceasefire in all areas that are witnessing military operations, wars and conflicts, has become an imperious necessity in front of another war facing humanity namely the Corona virus pandemic,” while warning that terrorist organizations could take advantage of the current dire health situation to their advantage.

Smail Chergui also seized the opportunity to firmly denounce on behalf of the African Commission what was stated in the declarations of two French doctors regarding laboratory experiments on Africans in the context of searching for a possible vaccine for Covid-19, explaining that the African Union adds its voice to the voice of the World Health Organization, which described such declarations as racist and shameful, as he put it.
