Chinese and Ramadan in Algeria
Echorouk visited many Chinese shops in the capital Algiers and spoke with the owners about how they are spending days during the holy fasting month of Ramadan as well as their view to fasting and Algerians’ traditions.

All met Chinese considered fasting as a hard punishment which they can not endure because, according to them, the Chinese who do not eat do not work.

The first thing the Chinese do in their early hours is eating a cold meal of fish and its derivatives in addition to rice, which is usually a relic of the dinner of the day before. They do not hesitate to eat a cold morning meal which is completely free of sugars.

In our conversation with a Chinese who is spending his second Ramadan in Algeria, he expressed his astonishment over the various Algerian traditions, especially when it comes to desserts, saying: “I tried last year to eat a quantity of Zalabia (Algerian dessert) after the dumpling from one of my Algerian friends but I could not swallow it and I vomited. “We Chinese, we have a great sensitivity of the desserts which Algerians strangely like”.

A 31-year-old Chinese woman, a manager of a shop in Algiers said: “like a large number of Chinese living in Algeria, we do not like Algerians’ meals such as Chorba”. “ The Algerian girl who is working in my shop invited me last year to eat with her family, and just after they put chorba (Algerian meal) on the table, I felt sick and I asked her mother to bring me some rice and fish”, She added.
