Chitour: “Desertic Project Was A Failure, Germany Will Work With Algeria To Revive It”
Desertec project was a failure, but Germany would accompany Algeria to become a pioneer in Africa in the field of renewable energies, the Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies, Chams Eddine Chitour, said.
“Germany will work in partnership with Algeria to realize a project in the field of renewable energies and the field of green hydrogen, which can be used instead of natural gas”, Chitour added, in response to questions of members of the national assembly.
Regarding the Desertec project, which was programmed in the partnership between Algeria and Germany, Chitour explained that this project was not completed because of “the banks’ refusal to finance it, given that its investment cost exceeds 450 billion dollars.”
The minister of energy warned that “in 2035 there will be a large deficit in the field of hydrocarbons, which necessitates a strong approach to renewable energies”, adding that “Algeria has a period of ten years to get out of this dependency and to carry out fruitful projects in the field of the energy economy.”
“Starting from 2022, about 1,000 megawatts of solar energy will be produced to reduce dependency on fossil energy sources. The launch of tenders related to this project will be next June”.
“Energy Ministry’s department is working with the Housing Ministry to prepare a book of conditions that will be applied in 2022 so that the new housing is environmentally friendly, using clean energies similar to solar energy”.
