CNIS Report: “Algerians Consumed Over 4 Billion Dollars Within A Period Of 6 Months”

Algeria’s import bill for foodstuffs, especially cereals, milk and semolina, increased during the first six months of 2018. The bill for food products totaled $ 4.59 billion dollars between January and the end of June, compared to $ 4.43 billion dollars in the same period of 2017.
According to figures from the National Information and Statistics Center of Customs (CNIS), the country’s import bill for the six main staple commodities – including cereals, milk, sugar, coffee, tea, beans and meat – amounted to $ 3.335 billion dollars during the first six months of this year compared to $ 3.330 billion dollars in the same period In 2017.
Customs data showed that imports of cereals, semolina and flour, accounting for 36 percent of Algeria’s total food imports, jumped to $ 1.67 billion dollars from $ 1.47 dollars, a hike of $ 207 million dollars, an increase of 14.7 percent between the two comparison periods.
The import bill of milk and primary milk products also rose to $ 785.5 million dollars, while imports of other basic food commodities declined. The import bill of sugar and sugar decreased to $ 438.94 million dollars from $ 585.14 million, that is a difference of $ 146.2 million dollars.
Imports of meat dropped to $ 106.4 million dollars from $ 140.3 million dollars, a decrease of $ 33.6 million dollars.As for vegetables, their import bill fell to $ 147.41 million from $ 167.44 million dollars, while Coffee and Tea imports dropped to 179.93 million dollars compared to 203.96 million dollars previously.
Regardless of the six commodities, the value of imports for other food products increased to $ 1.25 billion dollars between January and July of 2018 compared to $ 1.1 billion dollars during the same period in 2017.

Thus, the total invoice for the food and oil category meant for the food industry was estimated at $ 5.037 billion dollars during the first six months of 2018 compared to $ 4.871 billion dollars in the first half of the year 2017.
On the other hand, the country’s import bill of medicines increased significantly to $ 1.09 billion dollars during the first six months of 2018 compared to $ 883.52 million dollars in the same period of 2017.
