Committee of Legal Affairs brought important amendments to the reform laws

Algiers- Commission on Legal Affairs at the National People’s Council brought fundamental amendments to the draft election law, enabling the judges to oversee the municipal election commissions, in order to ensure the transparency of the electoral process and prevent the administration from intervening in such matters, in response to the demand of the majority of political parties.

According to informed sources, the Committee of Legal Affairs was keen to meet the basic requirement which was raised by various political parties, and included an important modification which enabled judges from chairing municipal elections, to ensure integrity of the electoral process and avoid manipulations of the results at the level of the municipal councils, and to stop concerns of the parties which think that fraud begins usually at the level of the municipal committees.

According to the former law, the municipal committees are made up of officials appointed by the governors, but subjecting them to judges in the future would make them autonomous from the administration, while the administrative committees review the electoral rolls to be chaired by judges also consecrate what was offered previously and to ensure transparency and ensure judicial supervision as well.
