Corruption touches 10 percent of provincial and municipal projects money in Algeria: report
The Algerian Counter Corruption Association sounded the alarm over the “horrible spread of corruption phenomenon in municipalities and provinces.â€
“Corruption is now a normal daily behaviour in public with no response from public authorities,” said the association.
For his part, Djilali Hedjaj told Echorouk the association devoted its annual report due to be published in June to the topic of corruption in provinces and municipalities.
He added that the report contains documents and evidences on the extension of corruption phenomenon and losses it caused to the public treasury.
The preliminary report showed that members of local commissions of public deals get 10 percent of the value of any public deal concluded in municipalities and provinces. “These practices are very normal now.”
According to the same report, corruption has been recorded in recruitment in terms of some sensitive positions relating to money world.
It confirmed that illegal ways in overstating deals in some provinces and municipalities are used in different sectors.
Corruption cases in the local level included the use of public money for personal purposes and close fellows. Because of that, “provinces and municipalities are now managed as they are small properties.”
The association confirmed that corruption cases in the local level have worsened the situation in many provinces in Algeria.
It called for the necessity of reviewing provincial and municipal law to make them in conformity with developments in the international level. That confirms the impression the Algerian government wants to give to its foreign partners especially to convince foreign companies to invest in Algeria and improve business atmosphere as well as Algeria’s image in the world.
