Damaged cold chain disrupts milk production in Algiers

The milk production at the unit of Birkhadem, Algiers, has slumped by 90 % since the beginning of November passing from 500 thousand litters to 50 thousand litters per day due to the interruption of the cold chain.

  •

  • The temperature range for a cold chain in food industries shouldn’t exceed 6 ° C but temperature has reached 14 to 16 °C at the this unit which caused several damages to the production forcing the employees to through huge quantities in the sewage.

  •

  • To recall, the damaged cold chain was set up in 2001 to replace the old one that was functional since 1984 without registering any technical problem. This one has paradoxically put into action again to resume production at a minimum level.

  •

  • Several distributors and retailers have refused to sell the milk that grew a real threat for the citizens’ health on account of the absence of brigades specialized in the control of the quality of the milk.

  •

  • A source inside the production unit has revealed that the produced milk doesn’t meet the international standards which require 105 grams of powder per litter whereas the average ranges between 90 and 95 grams per litter in this unit.
