Devastating Fire In the Port of Algiers
A devastating fire sparked in the central depot of Customs in the containers terminal of the port of Algiers, causing a 40 billion DZD loss to the public treasury.
Until Sunday morning, the firefighters were still combating the blaze which turned the spot into ashes, while the long fume could be seen from farthest parts of Algiers.
No human damage was recorded, fortunately, but the whole goods stocked in the depot had been turned into ashes.
A source within Customs told Echorouk reporter that this depot is the only one in the Port of Algiers, and used to clasp goods being seized by customs officers, including shoes, clothes, sporting equipment, informatics equipments and foodstuff.
The source said the public treasury has lost about 40 billion DZD, which could have been collected through selling in auction the destroyed goods.
Forensics as well as detectives of police and the National Gendarmerie have rushed into the spot, while an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of this devastating fire.
