The creation of this security body “Afripol” is geared towards the bolstering of cooperation among police forces from different African countries in their sustained fight against organized crime, terrorism, illegal migration, transnational trafficking networks and all forms of violence.

This was announced by Major General Abdelghani Hamel, Director General of National Security Services (DGSN) , adding that these are the challenges now facing Africa, including in the Sahel-Saharan region that has become a fiefdom and a crossroads for the smuggling of arms, drugs and a path to the phenomenon of illegal immigration.

This untoward situation with nefarious repercussions in the entire region prompted the establishment of “Afripol”, an African instrument for police and security cooperation with its headquarters based in Algeria, he underscored.

For his part, while taking the floor Admiral Jean Dufourcq, Doctor of political science, in the presence of executives of national security and specialists in this field, proposed the formation of a joint committee consisting of 10 Sahelan countries to follow up the latest developments unfolding in the struggle against the terrorism scourge, stressing that the “Daesh” terrorist organization is propped up from abroad.

Major General Hamel also stated in his speech at the forum of National Security in the Algiers district of Châteauneuf, under the theme “Geostrategic Challenges in the Sahel and North Africa,” held in the presence of Admiral Dufourcq and other prominent security specialists that Africa must shoulder responsibility to solve its own security problems without resorting to other foreign parties.

The DGSN Chief added that Algeria’s borders are secure and that we must strive to be safe economically, socially and politically as well and called for streamlining the security measures of all the Sahel countries through the African Centre for the fight against terrorism and ” Afripol “.

To this effect, a broad-based meeting is scheduled for 13 and 14 December 2015 for the setting up of this security organization that will bring together the regional African Police Organizations.

For his part, Admiral Jean Dufourcq, also chief editor of “National Defence Magazine”,  underlined in this context that a deep crisis has been besetting the Sahel since 1980 with a hike in illegal activities such as drugs and arms trafficking … stressing that to address these burning  issues affecting this southern region requires a sound anthropological approach and a reliable strategy.
