As part of the DGSN’s ongoing rejuvenation endeavour, several surveillance cameras have already been installed at the custody cells of the provincial police premises in the city of Oran in western Algeria.

The operation, which took place in the presence of senior police officers, representatives of justice and civil society associations was followed live in four provinces of Algeria which have been selected as “pilot cities” for the launch of this project already announced by the DGSN Chief during his recent inspection visit to Oran.

The first cities to be equipped with these smart monitoring cameras are Oran, Annaba, Algiers and Tamanrasset. “With these cameras, you can know remotely the temperature of the cell, its overall humidity in addition to the detailed conditions of those persons remanded in custody in order to preserve the latter’s dignity and guarantee their rights from any abuse or drift”, DGSN sources told “Echorouk”.

These cameras are equipped with high-tech devices and will be generalized across all provinces of the country. This project now under implementation is part of the

modernization of the infrastructure of the police services with a view to improving the conditions of provisional detention.

Several technical details related to the smooth installation of these smart surveillance cameras have been expounded to the audience at the official launch of this operation in Oran.

In a related context, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has decided to entrust the management of the numerous surveillance cameras installed in public places, streets and businesses across the country to the DGSN security services.

A presidential decree published recently in the Official Journal No. 45, states that “the national surveillance center is headed by the Prime Minister, who delegates these monitoring devices’ permanent use to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).”
