Muslim community has become a power in France but it has not reached the level of a lobby, Aniss Karkah told Echorouk Wednesday.
-
He added that the French law forbids census on the basis of race or religion. “The community counts around 7 million Muslims including 1.2 million Algerians. Some of them have reached leading positions but they do not adopt Islam as an approach.”
-
Municipalities in France have been in race to grant lands to associations to build mosques since 2000. “A simple association can be given a piece of land of 1,000 square metres for this purpose in view of the importance of Muslim community there,” Karkah said.

According to him, halal slaughter is one of the most critical issues in Muslims’ lives in Europe. He personally consulted how sheep, cows and hens are slaughtered. “We found out that slaughtering methods are not in conformity with those adopted in Muslim countries.”

“We issued fatwa to take out scarf when entering schools”
-
-
Karkah said Muslim women in France were given tow choices: scarf or ignorance after a law banning Islamic headscarves and other religious symbols from French state schools had been promulgated on September 14 2004.
-
“Headmasters started insulting any girl wearing the scarf and driving her out. That’s why, Muslim community were embarrassed and complaining.” Because of that, a fatwa was issued to allow Muslim girls taking out their scarves when entering the school and re-put them on when leaving class.

The Director of Fatwa Department stated that he is about to get over with the setting up of the September 14th 2004 Association to work on banning the law on scarves in France.
-
“The Association seeks to submit this case to the European High Court.”
