Draft bill to oblige car makers to manufacture spar parts in Algeria

A draft bill is ready on the level of Algerian industry minister Abdelhamid Temmar to impose on accredited car dealers to set up factories of some spare parts imported to Algeria.

  • The bill gives to car makers a deadline to adapt with the new procedures. It stipulates that car dealers must deal with manufacturing within given deadlines.
  • This comes as a first step toward the concretisation of the State’s strategy aiming at directly going to manufacturing and not sub-contracting along with the integration of national manpower including engineers.
  • The government had withdrawn the idea of opening door to the creation of cars assembly as it is not profitable that Algeria imports all car components including seats and wheels.
  • It is necessary now to establish small-seized factories in charge of manufacture those components for the main producer.
  • The draft bill is expected to be submitted to the cabinet for approval.
  • CEO of the national company of industrial cars Mokhtar Chahboub told Echorouk all car makers present in Algeria must manufacture spare parts in Algeria or some of them.
  • “Assembly has not achieved any additional value to the national economy,” he said.
  • “Because of that, it is not sufficient for car companies to assemble their cars in Algeria. They must carry out productive activities,” he added.
