General Magdi Chafai, Egyptian Interpol’s General Director said he did not receive any notification about the arrest of Algeria’s former energy minister Chakib Khelil. He criticized Mohamed Morsi, saying he wants to push Egypt to a civil war. “Who uses arms against us, we will face him using arms as well,” he told Echorouk in an interview.

What do you expect from Algeria?

Egypt and Algeria have many similar points. My country wants to cooperate and coordinate in terms of information and operational data exchange to fight organized crime networks and illegal weapons and drug trade.

Is there any accord between Algeria and Egypt in intelligence and military field?

Yes, there are many accords in terms of counterterrorism, the fight against dangerous criminal networks and expertise exchange. There is large cooperation in intelligence field including the fight against terrorism funding, corruption and money laundering in view to their relation with weapons smuggling and trade.

Did the Egyptian Interpol receive an official instruction to arrest Chakib Khelil and his family?

I do not have the prerogative to talk about this point. So far, I did not receive any order from the Interpol about the arrest of the Algerian former energy minister Chakib Khelil and his family.

Every day, media show shocking images of the Egyptian army shooting citizens. How do you explain that?

First of all, let’s me say something: media overstate things. Secondly, we use arms against everyone who fights us. We can not let terrorist organizations do whatever they want.

Many reports say there are more than 18,000 jailed people including women and children were tortured, sexually harassed and killed.

Those reports are baseless and invented by some people who want to shake Egypt’s stability. Media is partially responsible for what is happening in Egypt because they overstated things. They fabricate pictures and videos to deepen the crisis in the country.

The Arab League of Human Rights asked the Interpol president to stop cooperating with Egyptian authorities. Is it right?

Yes, it is. The Interpol is an executive body controlled by determined rules.

Speaking about football, do have fears of possible second crisis between Algeria and Egypt in the forthcoming match?

We do not hope so. We wish victory to Egypt.
