FIS senior members suggest a “compromise candidate” for presidential elections

Leading members of the dissolved-Islamic Front (FIS) called for “working together to reach a peaceful transition through a short transition phase.”

They suggest to accept the transition phase project and agree on a unique candidate in the next presidential elections.

According to FIS’ senior member Ali Djedi, the dissolved party released a document which is studied. “Some points of the document need to be updated.”

The document says people involved in criminality and corruption are afraid of international justice. “Can the current regime preserve national unity and avoid a popular uprising?” he told Echorouk.

The FIS recommends to launch urgent measures to calm down the situation and solve the crisis. “The political, social, media and preaching field must be opened by taking off all the restrictions on freedom of expression.”

The document called on the State to care for the crisis victims without exception including those whose relatives were killed or reported missing. The government should also admit the rights of people detained without judgment or who were dismissed due to their political beliefs. Political asylum-seekers have to be allowed to come back home and stop prosecutions against them.

The FIS also called for creating a national commission for the truth, justice and reconciliation. Its mission would be seeking the truth, justice and reconciliation. “It would be an impartial commission composed of religion scholars, lawyers and politicians. It should show the truth about missing people and the release of prisoners before its work is ended by general amnesty.”
