Foreign universities grant honorary diplomas to Algerian businessmen

A group of parliamentarians are set to question the minister of higher education Rachid Haraoubia over diplomas granted by suspicious foreign universities to a number of Algerian businessmen in order to beef up their résumés.

•  Corroborated declarations made to Echourouk revealed that these diplomas do not obey the scientific requirements and are given to people who didn’t even pass their baccalaureate exams thanks to mediators from the Algerian universities.

• A number of deans of universities have declared to Echourouk that those honorary diplomas and are generally granted to people as an acknowledgement for their achievements but with the consent of the relevant ministry.

• A member of the parliament has asserted that a US university known for its animosity to the Arabs and Muslims alike has recently granted honorary doctorates to a number of businessmen and parliamentarians though they do not fulfil the requirements.

• The parliamentarian has warned against the spread of this phenomenon and called on the relevant ministry to react accordingly considering the move as a blow to the Algerian universities and thousands of university graduates alike.
