Former ambassador: The regime is gaining time

7 months after the famous presidential discourse given to the nation by the president Bouteflika where he dwelt on his intent to conduct in-depth political reforms, the situation has not changed a lot amid unprecedented popular revolutions that swept through the Arab world.

  •

  • Though the Algerian popular uprising has paved the way to the so called “ Arab spring” two decades ago, the outcome didn’t live up to the expectations. Some even said that this revolution was devoid of its content and aborted…

  •

  • Neighboring countries like Tunisia has elected its constituent assembly, Egypt has revised its constitution, Jordan disbanded its government and is set to organize elections before the end of the current year.

  •

  • Algeria doesn’t seem to be concerned by the latest developments and kept the schedule unchanged ( legislative elections for May and local ones for October 2012) , brushing aside the events that rocked the Arab world.

  •

  • The former minister of communication Abdelaziz Rehabbi considers that the absence of a genuine political volition stands behind the failure of the promised political reforms” I could be right if I say that the slow motion of the political reforms is done on purpose, the decision makers in the country look forward for a set back in the neighbouring countries in a move to frighten their own people inside”.

  •

  • The former ambassador to Spain has further indicated that the short-sightedness of the legislators in Algeria make them impervious to all forms of ideas that come from abroad spreading false concepts that say: what comes from abroad is certainly evil.
