Former and present mayors involved in shady affairs

More than 1499 mayors of various municipalities across the country were charged for money embezzlement, abuse of power and breach of faith since the local elections of 2007, latest figures have revealed

  • The mayors took advantage of their large prerogatives to misappropriate the municipalities’ funds and use them for their own benefit including the distribution of real estates properties and housing units with the aim to win a seat at the parliament.

  • The mayors have used void discourses during their electoral campaign to attract the voters but all the promises vanished in the air as soon as they sat on the “thrown”, stirring the populations’ anger that translated into protests.

  • Amazingly enough, most of the mayors have a very low educational level; however, very convincing when it comes to sway the plain citizens with fake and void discourses. Many found themselves propelled by political parties to win a second or a third mandate in a row0.

  • For instance, the former mayors of Baraki, Algiers were put in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of power. One of them was involved in an illegally distribution of housing units with money in return.

  • He has also used his position to favour several 36 operators through shady deals and embezzled staggering sums of money.

  • The mayor of Bouzareah, Algiers, is currently under investigation for abuse of power as he seized a real estate property belonging to a dead war veteran to transform it into a property development project..
