France poked its nose again in the internal affairs of Algeria, through an oral question asked by Deputy Ibrahim Hammouche to French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, asking him about the fate of the initiative of dialogue between the authorities and the popular movement in Algeria and about France’s position on it, even though the file is internal and has nothing to do with France or the European Union, in addition to the dialogue initiative launched by Mr. Tebboune the day after his election as President of Algeria.

Ibrahim Hammouche, the deputy for the democratic movement in France, addressed an oral question to the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, in which he referred to the general situation in Algeria before and after the presidential elections that resulted in the victory of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The MP questioned France’s position on the recent events in Algeria and diplomatic measures to be taken to encourage dialogue between the Algerian Authorities and the peaceful popular movement, as stated in the text of the question: “We respect all the democratic principles of the Algerian state, and we affirm at the same time that we are with the people and for the sake of the people who have shown great peace in the popular movement now unfolding in Algeria”.

The MP added that the presidential elections that Algeria witnessed on December 12th had taken place under normal circumstances, despite the pressures exerted by the authorities – according to him – “through intimidation and pressure on the popular movement, which questioned the legitimacy of the elections”.

According to the parliamentarian, “The popular movement, which was distinguished by its peacefulness and democracy, and contributed to restoring the cohesion of the Algerian people, who, according to them, have been demanding for nine months for change and the departure of the symbols of the regime,” adding, “This movement exists today in all parts of Algeria and is proceeding in a civilized manner”.

For his part, the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, responded to the question asked by the French Member of Parliament, who is of Algerian origin, stressing that the polls that Algeria knew on December 12th had taken place in a democratic manner, adding that France followed closely and respected the returns of these elections clearly won by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

He added that the Constitutional Council approved the final results of these elections, and the President-elect will be sworn in on Thursday, saying: “The Algerians who went out in peaceful demonstrations for nine months in a row have shown a high level of development and awareness, so we hope that the dialogue today will duly take place”.
