Freed Algerian sailors to be repatriated to Algeria later this week

Somali pirates have released an Algerian-flagged ship the MV Blida which they hijacked in January with 27 crew members, according to European Union anti-piracy task force. The vessel with 17 Algerians and several Ukrainians and Philipinos is now reported to be en route to the port of Mombassa in Kenya.

• The freed Algerian sailors are expected to be safely repatriated later this week to Algeria after their long ordeal at the hands of the Somali pirates.

• The EU Naval Force Somalia said the MV Blida which was released from piracy control late on Nov. 4 was seized on January. 1, approximately 150 nautical miles southeast of the port of Salalah, Oman, while en route to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

• “The 20,586 tonne Bulk Carrier MV BLIDA, Algerian flagged and owned, was pirated on Jan.1, while enroute to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from Salalah, Oman,” The EU Naval Force Somalia spokesperson Harrie Harrison said in a statement issued on Monday.
