French official Jean Pierre Chevenement pleads for Friendship but declines repentance
The head of the Algerian – French Friendship Association, Jean Pierre Chevenemant has called on both the Algerian and French citizens to inspire from the South African model in dealing with post colonial issues that still undermine the bilateral relationships though 50 years have past since the independence of Algeria.

Replying to Echourouk question over the possibility of bridging the gap between Algiers and Paris amid the reluctance of the other side to acknowledge its colonial crimes, the former Defence minister has declared” The pending problems could be solved thorough conscience, noting that the South African experience in achieving reconciliation between the whites and blacks after years of apartheid, remains the perfect model to follow for the Algerian French relationships.

Talking on he sidelines of five day official visit to Algeria, Chevenemant has indicated the pending issues have to be tackled by the historians singling out the role played by the committee “ Truth, Justice and Reconciliation” in vanquishing the regime of apartheid in South Africa, though the Algerian – French case is quite dissimilar.

The mayor of “ Belfort” who is the second French official to pay a visit to Algeria in less than a week after the French foreign minister Alain Juppé, has evasively replied to the journalists questions over the French crimes saying “ France has to be conscious about its colonial past”.

The French official hailed the good bilateral ties between Algeria and France that reached a new standard since the coming in to power of the president Bouteflika in 1999, noting that this development was quite natural on account of the historical , cultural and sociological bonds that exist between the two countries.

Jean Pierre Chevenement is due to confer tomorrow with the Algerian Premier Ahmed Ouyahia and other officials including the former PM Mouloud Hamrouche and Reda Malek.
