Gendarmerie forces seize 34 tonnes of drugs and loads of weaponry in Béchar region
The Bechar-based National Gendarmerie forces succeeded on Sunday in seizing a huge quantity of various drugs and heavy weaponry including several Kalashnikov rifles and ammunition which were about to be introduced into Algeria from neighbouring Morocco.
- A total of 34 tonnes of cannabis and other types of narcotics were intercepted by the Gendarmerie forces who rounded up during the anti-traficking operation a smuggler of Moroccan nationality who attempted to introduce the loads of drugs and weaponry into Algeria from neighbouring Morocco.
The smuggler who was at the wheel of a 4 – drive vehicle was arrested in the locality of Hassi Ghabi in the Bechar region not far from the Algerian – Moroccan border.
The Gendarmerie forces also tracked down a group of smugglers in the area and an exchange of fire occurred during the hot pursuit. Several of them were later rounded up and taken to custody.
