Gérald Darmanin’s Visit To Algeria Martyrs Memorial Provokes Anger Of The French Extreme Right
The visit of Gerald Darmanan, the French Interior Minister to the Martyrs’ Memorial to pay tribute to the souls of Algeria martyrs of the liberation revolution, sparked criticism of the extreme right and anger at this step.
“From the Martyr’s Memorial in Algeria, Darmanin pays tribute to the soldiers of the Liberation Front and tramples on the memory of the Harkis and Pieds-noirs,” wrote Nicolas Meizonnet, an MP for the National Assembly (formerly the National Front) led by Marine Le Pen, commenting on the visit.
“He is loyal to repentance at any cost. This government does not love France and its history”, he added.
On Sunday, the French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin visited the Martyr’s Memorial in Algiers, to pay tribute to the martyrs of the liberation revolution, just like all foreign officials who visit Algeria did in the framework of a diplomatic protocol between Algeria and other countries.
During his two-day visit to Algeria, Darmanin said after he met with his counterpart Kamal Beljoudi that “the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, is very committed to the existing relationship between Algeria and France and between our two countries and our two peoples, and I have come to assure the (Algerian) Interior Minister of the full cooperation of France on all matters concerning our ministries.”
“We discussed important issues concerning the great power of Algeria here in the Mediterranean region, especially the Libyan issue and the file of illegal immigration facing Algeria, which we have to address because we are facing the movement of people throughout this space that we share.”
