Abdelkader Hadjar

In a statement made on Tuesday to Echorouk newspaper, the Algerian Ambassador in Tunisia, Abdelkader Hadjar, has announced that a total of 53 Algerian detainees will be freed shortly after unflagging efforts deployed over the past few weeks by the Algerian diplomacy to this effect.

Mr Hadjar indicated that he had been  received byTunisian Prime Minister, Hamadi Djabali, with whom he examined the fate of the Algerian prisoners in Tunisian stressing that the Tunisian Premier had given the green light for the release of 53 of them in the very near future.

Those Algerian detainees were given prison sentences by Tunisian justice, ranging between 10 and 46 years but none of them was jailed on charges of terrorist activities, Mr Hadjar explained.

According to the prisoners’ families, these are about 200 Algerians still in Tunisian jails because of various breaches and offenses committed on Tunisian soil.

The Algerian Ambassador further underlined that the Algerian Embassy in Tunis and the Consular representations in Kef, Gafsa and Tunis itself were striving strenuously through regular contacts with the relevant Tunisian authorities to secure the release of all the Algerian prisoners there as early as possible.
