Head of Algerian consumers' Federation : “Tons of bad meat and foodstuffs served at charity restaurants”

The Head of the National Federation of Consumers, Zaki Harir, warned in a statement to Echorouk, against the spread of bad meat and non edible foodstuffs in charity restaurants by benefactors and traders amid a terrible silence on the part of the committees of inspection and control, which turn a blind eye to a large number of violations and breaches that afflict these restaurants' customers ranging from the poorest people to passers by.

  • The spokesman said he visited, last year, a large number of charity  restaurants scattered in the various coastal and inland cities, under the supervision of the Red Crescent and charity associations. On the spot, he found out many abuses related to the feeding conditions and validity of food, which are provided by the traders because they are close to expiry, particularly chicken which sometimes caused collective food poisoning and  the outbreak of serious infectious diseases.
  • Such restaurants are charity institutions; that’s why the committees of control and inspection ignore them, and when they control them they are tolerant and do not deal strictly with these restaurants that are widespread in the holy month of fasting of Ramadan, as their number reaches 2000 restaurants.
  • With such figures, Algeria is on top of the list of the number of charity restaurants in the Arab countries, and despite the Algerian laws obliges them to respect the health conditions, however; they are violated in many restaurants.
