Heavy Rains Kill 12 People Northern Region of Algeria

12 people died, one missed and 76 others were injured during the three-day rainfall that hit the northern region of the country.

 

According to firefighting services, the heavy rains that fell during the three last days forced hundred families out of their shanty houses.

In Bachdjerrah suburb, in the southern east outskirts of Algiers, fire fighters have evacuated 36 families living in shanty houses, while a man is reported missing, following the flooding of Oued Ouchaiah river, of which waters surged on the ramshackle dwellings built on its both sides.  

Floods have surged on a primary school in Hai el Badr neighborhood, eastern Algiers, forcing the school students to stay home. 

The heavy rains poured down on Gue de Constantine neighborhood, southern Algiers outskirts, blocked the road linking the train station to the main street.

In Draria suburb, southwest of the capital outskirts, the land slipped near four houses, while floods hit the road linking Cheraga to Ouled Fayet, and the road linking the Sheraton Hotel to Staouali. 

Figher fighters have managed evacuated a car trapped inside a tunnel in Ain Benian, in the western coast of Algiers, after being filled with rain water.

Elsewhere, 4 people died and 7 others were injured on account of bad weather in Constantine, Bejaia and El Bayadh provinces.

However, fire fighting services recorded 38 road accidents, including 6 lethal ones, provoked by the bad weather, causing the death of 6 people and injuring 76 others.
