High school teachers flee southern provinces for lack of basic commodities

An inquiry conducted by the High School Teachers National Council over the causes behind the weak pedagogical level of students in the south, has revealed that the main reason is due to the lack of incentives for the personnel working in those areas.

  • The great majority of the teachers are seriously considering the possibility to quit their posts and move back to the North seeking for better opportunities.

The press attaché of the council Messaoud Boudiba has indicated in a declaration to Echourouk that the investigation conducted by his institution revealed that the absence of basic commodities for the teachers in the southern parts of the country has engendered this situation.

The southern provinces are lagging behind in terms of results if compared to the northern parts especially on the baccalaureate and middle school exams.

For instance, M Boudiba adds, the total number of the teachers in the southern provinces of the country equates the number of the teachers working in province like Tizi-Ouzou , 100 Kms east of Algiers.

He has further indicated that even the teachers of the south are reluctant to move to the far south on account  of the absence of the basic commodities like housing, noting that the problem could be resolved by providing housing to the teachers based in the north to attract them to the southern parts of the country.
