Interior Ministry authorized through Algiers’ Wilaya, a group of political parties and personalities who boycott the Presidential Elections of April 17, 2014, to organize a popular rally that it called for next Friday in Hassan Harcha Hall, Lakhdar Ben Khellaf, representative of the Front for Justice and Development, told Echorouk.
“Interior Ministry has agreed to grant a license for the syndicate on Tuesday evening”, he added.
“The syndicate has issued a statement on Tuesday, through which it stuck to organizing the rally, which it called for next Friday at Harcha Hall, after obtaining a license from the officials of the hall.”
“The group stuck to assembly and started in gathering people, because there was no objection in obtaining the license, before it has been been given a license.”
“The request for a license has been deposited on the level of the organization’s mandate of Algiers 12 days ago, and it met all the legal requirements, then the Query Directorate called us and confirmed that it had not yet received a response from the Interior Ministry of Interior, before contacting us again to say that we are granted approval for organizing a rally”.
Djabellah Front’s leading member said that the syndicate which was meeting on Monday, insisted on starting to gather people even before getting a license from the Interior Ministry, in order not to fall into the problem of a lack of time, especially since they got the license from the officials of the hall; “We did not link the gathering with the license because we refused to lose the opportunity as we are used each time, by granting the license at the last minute, so we set out to gather people even before we received it.”
It seems that the authorities were embarrassed of the recent international criticism about the repression of opposition in Algeria, in particular since it licensed before this gathering, the activity which has been allocated to raise awareness about the importance of elections, and that was attended by the parties which support the President Boutaflika.
Human Rights Watch has criticized on Monday, the actions that were carried out by the Algerian authorities, saying that it has deployed a large numbers of cops, and arrested protesters to prevent them from organizing protests in Algiers, before the Presidential Election that are scheduled for April 17, and called for the need to abolish the decree of 2001, which prohibits protests in Algiers.
