Katie Holmes braves the chill as she starts filming new movie after no-show at Oscars

After failing to show at the Oscars on Sunday, everyone was wondering what had kept Katie Holmes away from the Los Angeles event.

• It turns out the actress swopped post-Oscar parties for an early night thousands of miles away on the other side of America in preparation for filming her new movie, The Extra Man.
• No glamour outfits for her, just a dowdy ensemble to protect her from the New York cold.
• The gaunt-looking star was also seen carrying a bag emblazoned with the slogan ‘I Love My Home… Planet Earth’ and a pair of ballet shoes, which she later changed into.
• She was not the only star to shun last night’s Oscars at the Kodak Theatre.
• Others who stayed away included her husband Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lopez.
• Her new film centres on a failed playwright played by Kevin Kline working as an escort for rich widows in New York striking up a friendship with – and becoming a mentor to – Paul Dano’s troubled wannabe writer.
• The movie also stars John C. Reilly and is being co-directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini.
• Katie Holmes has caused concern recently after losing weight on an extreme diet called Purification Rundown.
• Endorsed by husband Tom’s Church of Scientology, the detox regime has left the 30-year-old looking painfully thin and exhausted.
• She reportedly missed the recent Armani party in New York during Fashion Week because she was feeling so run down.
• The former Dawson’s Creek actress finished her run in the production of All My Sons on Broadway in January and began filming The Extra Man earlier this month.
