Madjer charity game in Algiers Olympic stadium raises big spin-offs

A charity football match organised on Monday in Algiers by former Algeria international and Unesco ambassador Rabah Madjer raised €150 000 (R1.5 m) meant to achieve several projects for African children.

  • A squad composed of former world footballers challenged a team of former Algerian players during the charity gala held at the Stade du 5-juillet, and won 4-2 by the visitors.

  • The visiting team was captained by former France international Christian Karembeu, which also included Belgian Jean-Marie Pfaff, Italian Alessandro Altobelli, Portuguese players Vitor Baia, Rui Barros and Fernando Couto and Tunisian Adel Sellimi.

  • The garnered funds will essentially be invested in health and education projects under the auspices of Unesco, organisers said.

  • Algerian football legend Madjer, 53, reached stardom in the 1980s while playing for Portuguese side FC Porto, winning the European Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 1987.

  • Rabah Madjer was named African Footballer of the Year also in 1987.
