Major companies hold sway on 85% of used seeds
The minister of agriculture Rachid Ben Aissa has called on the private and national operators working in the sector of cereals to participate in securing the alimentary self-sufficiency of the country that counts 1 million farmers.

In a declaration to Echourouk the Secretary General of the Algerian free farmers Gaid Salah has indicated that Algeria has lost 85% of its control on the seeds it uses during its yearly production.
-
-
He explained this drastic shortfall by the fact that the Algerian farmers have abandoned the traditional techniques used to store the seeds of the current year.
-
-
Gaid Salah has further noted that Algeria has lost its alimentary independence after major international companies held sway on seeds production forcing the Algerian farmers to turn to them.
-
-
He has further added that the Algerian farmers use 15% of the locally produced seeds at best, which adds to the country’s imports’ bill year after year.
