Mayor’s wife makes public details over her husband’s arrest

Taking the floor before journalists at “ Echouoruk forum” the wife of the arrested mayor of the municipality of Zeralda, western Algiers, Mrs Sabrina Khathir has declared that her husband was the victim of the “ political and financial mafia”.

  • She has seized this opportunity to call on the president Bouteflika to open an inquiry over the circumstances of her husband’s arrest that she penned a kidnapping. She has vowed to make of her husband’ case an international affair.

  • Mrs Khathir has asserted that the policemen who arrested her husband intended to kill him if not the presence of a bridal cortege on spot. She went on saying that her husband was not “vulgar terrorist”.

  • She has indicated that her husband was arrested soon after the Independence Day and the attorney was transferred to Constantine, eastern Algeria. “Corruption took it all, how do you explain that my husband has lodged nearly 30 complaints since his election in 2007 over cases of corruption but for no avail because the brother of the attorney was involved in the affairs.

  • Mrs khathir has further asserted that plain-clothes policemen stormed my house without a search warrant considering the act a law infringement. They seized the mayor’s personal computer, noting that several high- profile personalities including the deputy attorney’s wife and the judge of Hadjout are involved in the case.

  • For his part, the head of the Algerian Forum for the Fight Against Corruption, based in Spain, M. Fetti Sofiane has indicated that the arrest of the mayor of Zeralda was a clear infringement of the international charter that Algeria has signed.

  • He is working on gathering 1 million signatures to pressure for the liberation of the mayor in addition to dossiers proving his innocence and forward them to the international institutions including the UN SG.
