MDG Summit: Algeria to participate in the work of the United Nations' 65th session

Algeria, represented by its Foreign Affairs Minister at the head of an important delegation, will participate in work of the UN 65th session of the General Assembly, a statement by the Foreign Ministry said.

 

  • The UN session will discuss several points, including world peace and security, as well as disarmement and achieving  goals for the Development and cooperation between the southern countries to preserve human rights.

 

  • The same source said that Medelsi will take part in the debate and talk about Algerian issues, as well as participating in high –level meetings.

 

  • The statement clarified that these high-level meetings will focus on the development and biodiversity in developing countries.

 

  • Algeria will also engage in a number of ministerial coordination  meetings such as the meeting of Islamic Conference and the G77, China and the League of Arab States, the G15 and the Group of Friends for Civilisations  Alliance, China-Africa, Arab-South America States.

 

  • The statement added that the UN session will be an opportnunity  for Algeria to conduct a series of talks with foreign countries about bilateral interests.

 

  • The current session of UN General Assembly, its 65th, began work on Septmber 15, at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Former president of Switzerland Joseph Deiss was elected its chairman. Speaking at the opening, he indicated that he intends to make every effort to ensure that the work session is effective.

 

  • “Very often we hear the view that the UN and its General Assembly did not have the real opportunities necessary to act and that it generally just talks shop. But I hope that starting with the 65th session we will demonstrate the opposite,” said Deiss, The Voice of Russia informs.

 

  • Stressing that the session began “with a heavy agenda,” Deiss highlighted three broad areas to focus: to ensure the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved; to reinstate the United Nations and the General Assembly at the center of global governance; and to promote sustainable development.

 

  • “Our efforts in the three areas will make essential contributions towards peace and security, international cooperation and friendship between peoples,” Deiss said, Xinhua reports.
