Media professionals outraged by the minister’s draft law
Media Professional and various unions have expressed their astonishment to the minister’s move who brushed them aside during the preparation of the preliminary project of the draft organic law related to media.

They consider that Nacer Mehel hasn’t fulfilled the promise he made to the journalists to organize forums on journalism likely to be the basis of the new law.

The new draft law restrains considerably the journalists’ freedom of expression if compared with the 1990 media law. It contains nearly 20 coercive provisions and reduces the journalist’s immunity. We are embittered because the man was a journalist and if he doesn’t protect the profession who will do it?”.

The spokesman of the group of protesters Ryadh Boukhedcha has indicted “ We’ve been disappointed by the text of the project that didn’t live up to the expectations of the media family, I think that the minister’s real intent was to tighten the net around the profession because he didn’t even consult the professionals during the drawing up of the draft law. He went on saying “ The minister has promised during our protest campaign last spring that he will organize a national debate over journalism before issuing any law, but his last move proves that the total absence of a volition to consult the media professionals”

The protesters vowed to react accordingly within a week.

For his part, the Algerian Journalists Union ‘s SG Kamel Amarni has vehemently criticized the draft law for its focus on punishing the journalists noting that the relevant ministry didn’t take into account the union’s suggestions forwarded to the head of National Consultation Committee Abdelkader Ben Salah, except some minor issues.
